Every project represents
a unique opportunity

The design process

Every project represents a unique opportunity; but whether you have a large country pile or a bijou city courtyard, each project begins with the same first steps.

We offer a comprehensive design package, from an initial free consultation, through to full design and build.

  • An initial consultation is offered free of charge. This is to ensure that both parties are a good fit for one another. Building a strong working relationship from the start, is crucial to ensuring the success of the design process.

The consultation might be done face-to-face, via a virtual meeting or through a telephone call, depending on individual preferences and your location relative to our studio.

  • After the initial consultation and conversation to discuss your aspirations, we will arrange a first site visit.

The site visit might take up to a full day, depending on the size of your site.  It is an opportunity for us to hear your ambitions in more detail – who will be using the space, how you want to use the space, the future maintenance and upkeep considerations.

It’s also our chance to gain a better understanding of the conditions – the light, the topography, the views, the architecture and the history of the site – all of which contribute to the fundamental building blocks of creating a successful garden design.

Following the site visit, we will write-up a brief, detailing everything as discussed during the site visit and provide an outline of the anticipated work.

At this stage, we will also agree a fee for an initial Concept Design. Following agreement, we will progress a full site analysis.

  • The site analysis is the first fundamental step before putting pen to paper on the design.

It will capture the ‘as-is’; topographical levels, services, soil type, any key elements which need to remain in situ etc.

It doesn’t sound exciting, but it really is a crucial step before progressing the design on paper.

Depending on the size of the site, it might be necessary to commission a full topographical survey.

  • The Concept Design phase is iterative and you will be actively encouraged to get involved.

Mood boards and visual aids will be produced during this phase, to ensure the aesthetic of the garden is progressing to align with your expectations and to realise your aspirations.

  • As soon as you are content with the Concept Design, we will progress the Detailed Design.

This will include provision of all the necessary drawings, to build and implement the final garden design (the Master Layout Plan).

At this stage, we can discuss whether you would like to retain our services to manage the build, including the sourcing and coordinating of external contractors.

We also provide a comprehensive plant sourcing service; we can visit site to layout the plants and oversee the final planting-up, following completion of the construction phase.

Advice on a schedule of upkeep and ongoing maintenance will also be discussed as the project progresses.
